When you closet matches your world.

So yesterday, I spent about an hour tripping over shoe boxes and throwing numerous clothing items around my apartment to loocluttered-closet-clothes-mess.jpgk for one pair of shoes. Shoes…blue suede shoes to be exact; that ended up being on the top self, laughing at me for the hour length of time. Why do I continue to put myself through this torment and why do I create a bigger mess to clean up…ugh. All of this on a Monday morning. As I put on the shoes I laughed and thought why does my closet resembles my life….a whirled wind of everything spinning around me like a tornado. Collar shirt, polos, jeans, sweaters, ties, and shoe boxes all defeating me in the challenge of presenting a perfect look for the work day. Something has to give and I mean NOW or maybe I need to give some stuff away.

Why do we hoard some much, especially clothing? We feel that the more we have the better off we are, but it only creates mess. It’s kind of ironic, because we hoard clothes like we hoard our problems. Our problems become the shirts and socks of our life.  It’s like the shopper who shops based on emotional states and justifies it based on a want. There problem still exist and now you have another garment to crowd your closet. We must learn when to purge our problems and purge clothing, but this task becomes extremely difficult. We are attached to our favorite dated pair of shoes like we are to our problems; that one problem that we want to go away, but provides us something to cry about.

Getting rid of the old to bring in the new!

It’s time to drop my clothes as I drop my problems. My world shouldn’t be just as messy as my closet and vise versa. How do we do this mOOdee? What are you suggestions? Well, I’m going to say first we have to learn how to let go and let be. As humans we are prone to let issues lie and cover them up with a beautiful smile, but never fully dealing with the issue. Similarly we push the ugly sweater that we have a connection with in the back of the closet instead of giving it away. It’s time to throw them both away and keep that space empty for something new and fulfilling. Our new word is “eliminate”; throwing the toxics issues and garments that do nothing but place clutter in our life in the trash ( and there for good). You won’t be able to retrieve them again. Adios!

As I am coaching you, I am coaching myself to make piles for your life like you do your clothes. The piles will help you sort through what needs to stay and what just ultimately has to go. Label your piles as “terminate” and “rejuvenate”; placing them in that order. Yes I placed the bad first because it’s easy to see the good in everything, but harder to digest the bad. That’s where the hard work begins! To make sure that this works, you want to start with your issues, because they will ultimately show you how your closet will end up. It’s like the saying when you look good you feel good, but we are going to say when you feel good you look GREAT. Use these piles to do away with the things that harbor negativity and stress, while pairing them with the items that you need to completely throw away. hangersUse the hangers of the tossed items as reminders that your problems are gone and you now have space for something new….a new outlook on life and space for new prospective. This may also be a new outlook into your closet, because you forgot what the walls of your closet actually looked like… thanks to all the clutter. Once you have completed the task note how you feel and if this task helped you “eliminate” and begin to “rejuvenate” your space. Your closet should now match your new world in a positive way.

Now what I failed to realize was that I love clothes and the “elimination process” is very difficult, but if I can do it once I can do it again. The results after tossing those unwanted items to the side made life a little easier to manage. I bagged up my problems just like I bagged the clothes and eased my morning dash to find that perfect outfit. My clothes and my problems will not be my burden. Let the “elimination” process commence.
