I’m America’s worst nightmare
I’m young, black, and holding my nuts like, yeah – Lyrics from Jay-Z “Young. Gifted and Black
That’s right! I’m starting your Monday with awareness. That in your face awareness that comes either through the sound of the bass shaking the walls or the tone of the verse stated above. Using this method to wake some of you up, while confusing a few of you. If you don’t already know I love music, so anything goes. Sometimes we need the harsh reality spoken to us through melodies and flows. It brings an cultural understanding to the world that tries to confuse us on a daily. This morning I am feeling aware and at the same time gutter. Jay-Z gives me the lift I need every time I let the opinions of this world define me as a Black body. This anthem give us the raw pride and ugly reality of our existence forbiddingly free place.
Although vulgar in it’s delivery, Jay-Z gives us a peek into his wokeness and encourages us to do the same. I use the lyrics of this song as my motivation to service my community the best I can, because those who claim to work for the residents don’t always do the same. I understand the struggle of the community and the constant fear of just basic living. This awareness of my community makes the connection with this population authentic rather than an act to scam and plot. That’s why I bang this anthem to provide me with empowerment and to tell others that we will not be forgotten.
There’s a different set of rules we abide by here
You may not want to blast this in your office space, but it’s more than alright to pump this up before you walk in and start your day. Reflect on this and remind yourself of who you are today. Always knowing where you came from and working towards better for the youth someday. We are Young, Gifted, and Black and it will always remain that way!
