After a rough ending to a daunting last week, I decided to let music be my guide back to me. The positive, motivational, and upbeat me. It seems that institutions, people, and standards try to break down those who are too strong to follow the stagnant and weak of plans. These are the people who dare not to walk in a straight line, but in a constant zig-zag until they find their way to their dreams. A way that wasn’t designed by a selected superior, but the natural leader who rules from above.
Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
After winter, must come spring
Change, it comes eventually… Lauryn Hill – Everything is Everything (1998)
Today, music brought me to Lauryn Hill’s “Everything is Everything” a song that has a appreciated rawness mixed with a -things will be what they will be- in your face tone. “Everything is Everything”, lyrically moves you with a hint of hip-hop and a dash of classic soul that makes a perfect blend of musical genius. Like a poet, Lauryn uses her words to tell you a short fable without setting an ending, but leading the listener to formulate his own understanding of the valuable lesson she just taught. This track is no different, she encourages us to stand on greatness and remember that things will be, but constant movement is a must.
It seems we lose the game
Before we even start to play
Who made these rules? (Who made these rules?)
We’re so confused (We’re so confused)
Easily led astray… Lauryn Hill – Everything is Everything (1998)
Lauryn convinces us to love ourselves so much that we won’t accept defeat, because we are much more than a statistical failure. She sings us into a trance that protests the need for the rules to change and for the norms to be broken. Opening the eyes of the listener to form an understanding that these are things that keep us astray from our goals. The game of life makes things seem unobtainable to keep those who never follow the pursuit of their destiny in the man’s average play-land. It is up to us to play the game with a winners attitude each and everyday. Remaining the MVP and finding unique ways to test the rules that have been placed on life and our existence.
So on this Monday, I hope that you wake up to realize that you are the key player to the game of life. You have acquired all the skills you need to be the best you, you show the world. Let them know that you won’t be stopped and that those on top will not stop your reach for their spot. Press forward, only use the rules that apply, and go get yours despite everything that is going on. Recall the video of a huge vinyl record on a turntable spinning around playing the track as Lauryn runs down the street dodging the turntable needle of distractions as it scratches back and forth trying to stop her journey towards greatness. This ends with Lauryn’s name of the record. She pressed through everything to obtain her everything (a damn good record).
