Music Monday

I would consider my taste of music to be very eclectic, but there is something about what I call “basement rap” that at times puts me in a space that I deem unsafe. Not because of the message of its expletives, but of its ability to revert me back to a time and place where fighting to be heard was my own priority.  There is something raw written between the lines that helps express the story of many, while giving you a ill beat to bop your head to. Today, I choose to release myself and tell you my hidden love for “Dreams and Nightmares” by Meek Mill. DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES

I used to pray for times like this, to rhyme like this
So I had to grind like that to shine like this – Meek Mill “Dreams and Nightmares”

There have been times in our lives where people have counted us out. Canceled out our dreams and spoke lies to deter our success. There is something about an underdog that defeats all the odds and humbly steps upon greatness. It is with the lyrics of Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares” that express a brutally honest story combined with boastful images of dreams turned into an industry’s nightmare. They said he couldn’t do it and he did it without having to sell one album. It is this push that has many of us eager to silence our haters and fight as the underdog just to state, ” I should have never been counted out”.

Gangstas move in silence, n**** and I don’t talk a lot
I don’t say a word, I don’t say a word
Was on my grind and now I got what I deserve f*** n*****
Hold up wait a minute, y’all thought I was finished?                                                                                                                                – Meek Mill “Dreams and Nightmares”

One should never give up on a dream because others deem it unreachable. Some people won’t like to see you win and some just want you to be a ray in their continuous shining of their sun. You have to learn that greatness doesn’t belong in the shadows and that it’s alright to sit back, work your magic, and let the end result end the chatter. I like the introduction to this track, because it reaffirms the question….Ain’t this what they’ve been waiting for? Then it arrogantly states ….”You ready” and takes you on a whirlwind of fact checking and providing receipts to all the trash talking of haters and naysayers. It’s a proven method that ones work towards greatness never needs to be put on display, but when you are on your grind; you definitely get what you deserve.

As I walk along in this new day, I take along the message of the gully anthem that silences the talk and makes others pay attention to the walk. I know the gallery is planning my fall, but as I move along in the plan I will notice how friends turn into enemies and those enemies into memories. The goal isn’t to take everyone, but only those that can congratulate the success of an underdog who fought through. – I’m GONE!

mOOd: I will always be like the little engine that could!
