The government and news media outlets are begging us to practice social distancing. It is more like the new normal to how we interact with the people who we usually find ourselves in close quarters with. Now we are expected to distance ourselves from family, friends, co-workers, and new acquaintances to decrease the spread of COVID-19. Yet, we are finding ourselves living our lives as if this virus is a scene straight out of the movie “Contagion” and we enjoying its plot with large tub of buttered flavored popcorn. Although we watched the panic of movies similar, we now are unable to relate to the stress and anxiety that is facing us today. It all can be stopped if we simply practice social distancing.
It’s extremely hilarious that a people who are highly dependent of their phones are experiencing difficulty with keeping themselves put for a few days or weeks. Isn’t it fair to say that we avoid face-to-face engagement to spend nearly every waking minute communicating through texts, tweets, and red colored hearts each and every day. We enjoy the convenience of comment boxes and FaceTime to communicate, but when asked to use those means to help end the war of the virus we DO THE OPPOSITE. I honestly thought that we practiced social distancing regularly or maybe I just did.
Lets break this down into smaller chunks. We are a social people, yet very unsocial. We stand in the same room, but would rather IG troll the hot guy in the corner than walk up to him and say “hi”. No, we stand a lengthy distance apart from strangers and avoid conversation like how we should be trying to avoid contracting COVID-19. Folks take it easy…please…you have been social distancing long before it was mandated that you do so. You didn’t like the company of crowded spaces nor did you like standing elbow to elbow on a crowded NYC subway train. A few days of me, myself, and I time is not going to damage you. You will live.
Honestly, you can still troll IG pages, use a alias name to send out random BS tweets, and dodge the people you know in public. Now you get to do it from the comfort of your home and your comfy couch. People lets get real….social distancing is not that bad. It is simply avoiding large groups of people or events that promote the need for people to mingle. If you think about (WE ALREADY DO IT).
So some examples of social distancing that you might have already been practicing:
- Public and private colleges suspending classes, going to Web-based learning and canceling all large campus meetings and gatherings. (You have practiced social distancing if you prefer online education over traditional education.)
- Libraries modifying their operations and restricting people from gathering by allowing them to pick up materials that have been reserved online or by telephone. (You have practiced social distancing if you enjoy e-books and audiobooks…you haven’t seen the inside of a library in years.)
- Businesses changing company practices, setting up flexible plans for employees to telecommunicate. (You have practiced social distancing if your job already allows you to work from home.)
My people don’t panic. We are ok! Don’t be scared of social distancing, because we were already engaging in it anyway. How about we find productive ways to occupy our time. Let the social distancing continue.
